Law to be bent as strike by uni nonacademic staff ends

The Higher Education Ministry says some laws will be bent as a strike by university non-academic staff came to and end today.Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella said that there are provisions in the law to ensure action is taken against university non-academic staff who staged a strike over several demands. The strike launched by the university non-academic staff came to an end today following talks held with the Minister. However he said that the law will be bent as the issue with the non-academic staff had been resolved. The Minister later told reporters that both sides reached an agreement to resolve the issues faced by the university non-academic staff.The Ministry had given a positive response to seven demands of the university non-academic staff. Kiriella said that while a verbal assurance had been given to the non-academic staff earlier, it was now given in writing. (Colombo Gazette)
